Background
Dihydrotestosterone is also known as 17beta-hydroxy-5alpha-androstane-3-one, 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone, 5alpha-DHT, or stanorone. It is a sterol whose double bond of testosterone is reduced at 5a. It acts as a true androgen to the accessory glands (prostate, seminal vesicle, etc.). The 5a-hydrogenase that forms the sterol exists in the cells of the accessory gonads. The complex of sterol and receptor proteins bound in cells enters the nucleus of the adnexal gland and promotes the synthesis of new proteins. It showed a slightly stronger androgenic effect than testosterone. Although 5beta-body exists in the form of testosterone in liver and chicken crown, it has no effect of male hormone. 5alpha-dihydrotestosterone is metabolized to 5alpha-androstane-3alpha-17beta-diol by the action of 3alpha-hydroxysterol dehydrogenase and excreted in vitro.
